South Africa steals the win!
Published June 17th, 2007 in , .After the last few weeks of rather unexciting rugby I was happy to watch a game between two great Rugby Nations. South Africa was by far the favorites for the day with their mighty forwards and the home ground advantage. South Africa showed their dominance in the first half, however they just didn’t manage to finish the great opportunities they had created for themselves.
Springbok Captain John Smith went down in the early first half and has apparently injured his hamstring. Victor Matfield took over the role of captain however John Smith’s leader ability was sorely missed by the boks.
The reason for our lapse is simple - the likes of George Gregan, Stirling Mortlock, Matt Giteau, Stephen Larkham and Lote Tuqiri have all the experience, and they absorbed our pressure and then began to dictate the game,” Jake White
At the break the Wallabies were in the lead 19-10. The second half saw the Springboks attacking and throwing all they had at the Wallabies. However the Wallabies defense stood the onslaught just as they had done in the first half. The score was 19-16 to Australia and a big upset seemed to defiantly be on the cards for the Springboks.
The turning point of the game was when an extremely young François Steyn managed to put over a drop goal from the side line to equal the score. A magic moment for the youngster and a heart breaking one for the Wallabies. In the dying mins Francois Styen slotted over another drop kick to give the Springboks the win! Great game Well done Boks for the win. This was also the last time we would see the Gregan, Larkahm combo in South Africa.
Here is François Steyn’s moment and one of the best drop goals I have ever seen! (Remember he was playing School boy rugby only 2 years ago!)

I think they did quite well. It’s a pity the ref didn’t have a word to both teams about the high tackles though (I might have missed it if he did) as I think you can’t have one rule for one and one rule for another. They should be both treated the same. Anyway, the Boks certainly put on a scary performance, in that I mean that they seem to have their oomph back, lots of energy and it looks like they are coming back which is a good thing. I hope the All Blacks are going to watch out for themselves on Saturday when they play against them.
